What does it stands for?
Voice over Internet Protocol

What does it mean? That you are able to talk via your computer when connected to the Internet to other people who are also connected to the Internet for free.

What are the Benefits? - If you are on broadband it means that you are able to make phone calls to other people for no additional cost. For instance you could phone your neighbour next door or a friend/relative in Australia for no extra cost to you.

How? You could use the service provided by Skype, this is a free service and enables an easy way to make phone calls from your computer to another user. www.skype.co.uk

What do I need? Best suited to broadband users you will additionally require a sound card in your computer and a microphone. We can assist to supply and install any of these for you. There are also special telephone handsets that are now available as well which can be attached to your computer by an USB connection.

Calling others not subscribed to Skype? - upgrade your package with Skype enabling cheap calls to be made to local, national and mobile numbers at a cost of a local rate only.

Wi-Fi Hotspots


What it means? If you have a portable computer such as a laptop which has wireless facilities you will be able to use the Internet facilities provided by others if you are in a wi-fi hotspot. A wi-fi hotspot is an area where you are able to pick up a wireless signal via your laptop to be able to browse the Internet.

Getting connected

When your laptop recognises an available network and you attempt to view a web page you will probably be redirected to a Welcome screen explaining what steps you need to take to get online.There are some free hotspots but most will probably charge per hour. You may be asked to enter a voucher code provided to you from a local facility that you may be visiting such as a café or accommodation etc. If you are a regular user of hotspots you can also pay a monthly fee for unlimited use but these would tie you to a particular provider's hotspot only such as BT OpenZone.

What you need - you will need to have a wireless enabled device. If your laptop does not have wireless capabilities, you can install an USB wireless adapter.
